Has your PC been making a vibration or high-pitched noise when you’re using it and are getting frustrated by the noise? This is one of the most frustrating flaws of modern technology. Learn more about what the cause of this noise is and what you can do about it!
What is coil whine?
Coil whine is the high pitched sound emitted from a machine when electrical power is running through it. It can sound like a buzzing or fan-like noise. All devices emit some level of sound, but the vibrations within high powered devices are more likely to become audible.
What causes coil whine?
It can be difficult to determine exactly what is causing a device’s coil whine, as there are so many possibilities. Coil whine is most frequently caused by a machine’s graphics card, and this can be true with many devices that are heavily used for gaming. It can also happen because the electrical coil is not securely attached to the motherboard of the machine, or because the processor is working hard. Unfortunately, coil whine is not always fixable.
Is coil whine a problem?
Although it can be annoying and disruptive, the vibrating or buzz-like sound of coil whine is not always the sign of a problem that needs fixing. On the other hand, if you hear a hissing or whistling sound coming from your device, that is a sign of a potential issue that should be addressed.
Can I eliminate the noise of coil whine?
One way to eliminate coil whine is to dampen it. Dampening the noise traps it within the machine. Look into the options of your specific device to see what cases or blocks you might be able to add to dampen the coil whine. Although if nothing is impeding the devices function, a replacement might not be covered by the manufacturer, part replacement is another option if you can determine where the coil whine is originating.
