When You Should Build Your Own PC

The decision to build your own PC or to purchase a pre-made PC (Dell, Apple, etc.) is a big one, but more often than not, building your own custom PC makes the most sense. If you’re stuck in between, here are a few signs you should build your own.

1. You have a need for high-end hardware but are on a budget

Depending on what your budget is and the hardware that you need, the cost can vary. But, in the world of computer hardware, you can build your own PC with the high-end hardware that you need for a more affordable price compared to purchasing a pre-made PC with this hardware already installed.

2. You’re interested in building computers

Whether you’re interested in building computers as part of your professional skill set or as a hobby, if you’re interested in the motion of computers parts and hardware, you should build your own PC! The process of building the computer, finding the right parts, and getting it to work is incredibly rewarding.

3. The configuration you want is hard to find

Since “off the shelf” PCs don’t have the customization options that building your own PC has, you will often have to overpay for a computer that has hardware you don’t need, just to get the configuration you do need. Building your own PC is your best option for getting the configuration you want without the extra hardware you don’t need.

4. You intend to modify the system after the initial build

If you know that you will be modifying your system beyond the initial build, building your own custom PC is your best option. You’ll have the extra space needed for some of these modifications and won’t have to worry about the specifications of the new hardware you’ll be using.

Liquid Cooling 101

liquid coolingAll computers have one thing in common: the production of heat. When the system is turned on and is being utilized for work or leisure, they generate heat due to the energy being used to work properly. There are now several ways to help assist your computer in the cooling down process with liquid cooling being one of the most popular options. But what is liquid cooling? How does it work? Why should you liquid cool your computer?

What is Liquid Cooling?

Liquid cooling, also known as water cooling, is a way to cool down your computer while eliminating the need for a fan within your system. Liquid is also much more efficient at cooling down the crucial parts of your computer compared to an internal fan.

How Does it Work?

A coolant is first poured into a reservoir, which is connected to a pump, which then pushes the liquid through a series of pipes and hoses to a conductive metal block on the CPU or GPU. When the liquid enters the conductive metal block, it is absorbing the heat before moving on to the radiator to cool down before completing the cycle again.

Why Choose Liquid Cooling?

Liquid cooling allows the components of your computer to cool down and take a break, without compromising the integrity of the system itself and is more efficient than air cooling. If you live in an area with a warmer environment or have multiple graphics cards in your system, liquid cooling is a great option for you! Liquid cooling is also extremely quiet, especially when being compared to internal fans, and has several customization features making it ideal for gamers.

Pros of Liquid Cooling

  • Cools your PC faster
  • Several ways to be customized for your needs
  • Easy to install
  • Offers a quiet solution versus internal fans

Cons of Liquid Cooling

  • Requires a larger system to fit the pipes and radiator
  • Costs more than air cooling
  • Maintenance to top off coolant levels and to ensure there are no leaks
  • Takes time to set up (although it’s very easy!)

Advantages of Liquid Cooling

An alternative to traditional air cooling, liquid cooling involves circulating coolants across specific parts of a computer or gaming system to remove excess heat. Although computers are supposed to generate heat, when they generate excess heat due to unfavorable circumstances, it can cause damage to the computer and even kill it. Computers that are purchased from reliable manufacturers, such as HP and Lenovo, come with these cooling systems built-in but if you opt for a customized PC, it’s crucial these systems are put in place.

Advantages of Liquid Cooling

1. More Space

A traditional computer has various fans within it to keep the PC cool. These fans are bulky and take up a lot of space and many of the individual parts of the PC require their own fan for different reasons. With a smaller profile, liquid cooling requires less space within your PC, allowing more space for additional components to be installed as well as give your computer a thinner profile.

2. Noise-Free Operation

Have you ever owned a computer that whenever you used certain applications or worked on certain projects, the fans in your computer would go haywire? The loud noises will occasionally sound like your computer is about to take off and quite frankly, they can be distracting. With liquid cooling, there is no need for these loud fans and the process of liquid cooling makes little to no noise.

Keep in mind that there will still be a few smaller fans to improve ventilation within your PC, but these will be low-powered and do not generate and loud noise.

3. Better Overclocking Potential

Raising the frequency of a processor chip is common with computer hobbyists, but this requires a lot of power consumption and heat generation. With liquid cooling, this excess heat can be removed more efficiently and allows the system to transfer heat over greater distances.

4. Cooling Specific Components

With liquid cooling, there is a higher degree of cooling specifications, meaning that certain components of the PC can be cooled faster and more efficiently than traditional types of cooling. Liquid cooling can also be used to cool down key components of a computer, including the hard drive, voltage regulator modules, and power supplies.

The Benefits of Building Your Own PC

benefits of custom pc buildsAlthough modern computers tend to last for quite a few years, the tech industry is constantly changing, which means that computer hardware often becomes obsolete within mere months. For people who need high-powered computers for one reason or another, this can be problematic, as they may be forced into purchasing new machines before they are ready to.

If you fall into this category, you may have begun considering the possibility of building your own PC next time you’re ready to upgrade. There are a variety of benefits to doing this. You’ll learn more about some of these advantages as you read the rest of this guide.

Flexible Design

Nobody knows what you need in a computer more than you. Manufacturers know what people want and need in general but aren’t designing their machines with your specific needs in mind. One of the perks of building your own PC is that you’ll have the design flexibility to make sure it does what you need it to do.

Furthermore, from an aesthetics standpoint, you’ll be able to make your PC look however you want it to. If you’d like the tower to have flashing green lights, for instance, you can add them.

Stronger Power Supply

When you build your own PC, you can choose whatever power supply you want. This means you can buy the highest quality product on the market without paying for the machine that goes with it. By sourcing your own parts, you’ll be able to save money, while having a stronger power supply than you probably could have afforded if you had purchased a pre-built machine.

Customization of Hardware & Software

This benefit is particularly meaningful to individuals, including gamers and developers, who like to run multiple operating systems at once. Need a Linux environment and a Windows environment? No problem when you build your own machine. Crafting a PC from scratch means that you have control over both the hardware you use and the software you put on it, whether it’s a little-known program you love or a specific OS.

Higher Quality Parts

As mentioned earlier, it’s much less expensive to buy individual computer parts than it is to buy a whole, pre-built machine. This allows you to source high-end pieces without blowing your budget. In the end, you’ll have a quality computer that both meets your unique personal specifications and is much nicer than anything you could have found in a store.

Upgrade Whenever You Want

The fact that you’re planning to build your own computer indicates that you’re quite tech savvy. This means you should have no problem upgrading your PC whenever you want to. If, for instance, a new graphics chip hits the market, you can simply replace the one you have in your tower without buying a whole new machine. This saves time, money, and hassle, making your life as a serious computer user a lot easier.

What is Liquid Cooling & How Can It Change Your PC?

Have you noticed sometimes you can hear the fan spinning inside your computer? Have you ever noticed the computer fan running extra loud, and often during the same time when your computer is also very hot? The main reason why the internal computer fan can get very loud is because most modern computers and IT systems operate at a very high pace, which results in a lot of heat generated inside the system hardware. In order to effectively cool the internal components of the computer and reduce the risk of overheating and potentially damaging the hardware, the internal fan must operate at a very high pace to keep up with the amount of heat generated. Anytime the computer is feeling very hot, the fan is usually spinning rapidly at the same time. Fan driven air has always been the conventional method of cooling computers and IT systems. Unfortunately, fans are not the most effective method of heat removal and the need to be cleaned regularly makes it very tedious. One option to eliminate the loud noise and even remove the need of a fan is through the use of liquid cooling.

Liquid Cooling Explained

Liquid cooling, also called water cooling, eliminates the need for an internal fan inside your computer. In liquid cooling, water is circulated between an engine and a radiator through a system of internal tubing. The water moves the heat from the engine to the radiator causing the water to cool off and then circulate back to the engine through the use of thermodynamics. Because liquids are much more effective at transferring heat than air, liquid cooling is a much better option to choose over internal fans to prevent your computer from overheating.

Why is Liquid Cooling Needed and What Are the Benefits?

Modern devices are running at a very fast speed and thus generate a lot of heat very quickly. As a result, conventional air cooling has been struggling to keep up with effective heat removal. In order to keep up with the speed of modern technology, there must be a better option than the conventional method. Currently, liquid cooling is the best solution for heat removal without creating any noise or pollution.

The biggest benefit of liquid cooling is the elimination of any loud noises caused by the internal fan. Whether it’s your regular desktop or maybe you’re a hardcore gamer, you will never have to deal with a loud fan again. Liquid cooling ensures your computer and IT infrastructure  is safe by eliminating the chance of overheating and extending the lifespan of your internal computer components. Perhaps the most interesting benefit of water cooling is the aesthetics because it will turn your computer or IT system into an appealing working of art.

Protecting Your PC From Algae Damage

Algae in a Computer?

When there is water anywhere, there is a risk of algae growing but it is easy to keep an eye on and prevent any damage. Follow along to learn more about how algae could be growing in your PC and how to prevent it.

  • Clean, rinse, and completely dry all liquid cooling parts before installing them in your PC.
  • Avoid using distilled water as your main coolant, as it contains the bacteria that algae use to grow and prosper.
  • Do not use Kill Coil, a type of Silver metal strips, in a water cooling loop that has distilled water as its main coolant. The silver ions that makeup Kill Coil strips are likely not strong enough to prevent biological growth in your loop. The mixed loop already has several types of metal as is so it is best to not test this loop.
  • Do not experiment using different types of coolant that have not been market tested and proven safe to use. Without this type of testing, you cannot be sure that the coolant you are choosing has the proper biological inhibitors to prevent algae growth. This is just one of the many reasons you should not use an untested coolant but there are several others so we highly recommend avoiding such solutions.
  • Be tedious in the way that you clean, rinse, and wipe-down each of your liquid cooling products to be sure you are not creating the perfect environment for bacteria growth, which will not only damage your liquid cooling parts but possibly your PC as a whole.

The Basics of Liquid Cooling Your Gaming System or PC

Learn More About Liquid Cooling

If you’re a gamer or a frequent computer-user, you’ve surely heard the term “liquid cooling” thrown around. Use our blog post to familiarize yourself with liquid cooling and see what all the fuss is about!

What is Air Cooling?

Air cooling is the system your PC or gaming system comes equipped with, which uses small fans to cool the whole system down. The air cooling system in most PCs works efficiently for the average user, especially in the first few years of use but if you are using your computer for more advanced activity such as gaming, air cooling may not be sufficiently cooling your system. If the heat in your PC isn’t properly dealt with, it will immediately begin harming your PC. Instead of getting rid of the heat completely, the fans simply work to cool down the air the same way a ceiling fan works to cool the hot air in your home. When there is a great amount of or significant heat, the fans have to work even harder to cool the air, which creates the noise you hear from your PC.

What is Liquid Cooling?

Liquid cooling is a newer alternative to the classic air cooling process. A more scientific approach, liquid uses thermodynamics, moving the heat from warm air and objects to cooler ones. This approach is called “liquid” cooling because it uses tubes that run cold air through the heated areas to cool them down. Though this system is more expensive than the air cooling system your PC or gaming system is currently equipped with, it will help your system work to its full potential, extend the life of your PC, and give you a better overall experience.

Important Notes Before Beginning

All mounting brackets are not created equally, therefore our tips may not work based which model and size you have. Pay attention to the details we mention as we go along to figure out if this will work for your mounting bracket.

Check Your AMD Socket AM4 Compatibility

Check the hole pattern on your block to make sure it is compatible. If it is not, unfortunately, this guide will not help you directly but if you are jumping from an AMD socket, Intel platform or EK-Supremacy EVO water block, you can use this guide to swap your mounting bracket. Though these are made by different manufacturers, this strategy will work.

Disassemble the Water Block

In order to begin, you must disassemble the water block. To do so, you will need a 2.5mm Allen key. This key comes with all EK-Supremacy EVO purchases but if you have a different model, you may need to purchase this piece. Unscrew the four bolts holding the water block together and disassemble its components. To use the EK-Supremacy EVO as an example, the components you should have after disassembling the water block are:

  1. Top
