What is Liquid Cooling & How Can It Change Your PC?

Have you noticed sometimes you can hear the fan spinning inside your computer? The water moves the heat from the engine to the radiator causing the water to cool off and then circulate back to the engine through the use of thermodynamics. Because liquids are much more effective at transferring heat than air, liquid cooling is a much better option to choose over internal fans to prevent your computer from overheating.

Protecting Your PC From Algae Damage

Algae in a Computer?

When there is water anywhere, there is a risk of algae growing but it is easy to keep an eye on and prevent any damage. Follow along to learn more about how algae could be growing in your PC and how to prevent it.

  • Clean, rinse, and completely dry all liquid cooling parts before installing them in your PC.
  • Avoid using distilled water as your main coolant, as it contains the bacteria that algae use to grow and prosper.
  • Do not use Kill Coil, a type of Silver metal strips, in a water cooling loop that has distilled water as its main coolant. The silver ions that makeup Kill Coil strips are likely not strong enough to prevent biological growth in your loop. The mixed loop already has several types of metal as is so it is best to not test this loop.
  • Do not experiment using different types of coolant that have not been market tested and proven safe to use. Without this type of testing, you cannot be sure that the coolant you are choosing has the proper biological inhibitors to prevent algae growth. This is just one of the many reasons you should not use an untested coolant but there are several others so we highly recommend avoiding such solutions.
  • Be tedious in the way that you clean, rinse, and wipe-down each of your liquid cooling products to be sure you are not creating the perfect environment for bacteria growth, which will not only damage your liquid cooling parts but possibly your PC as a whole.

How Can I Clean My Water Blocks?

Are you interested in cleaning the water blocks you’re using to liquid cool your PC? It is a good idea to do once in awhile but not for a frequent chore. Use our guide for some tips on the best way to safely clean your water blocks.

Cleaning Copper Water Blocks

The best way to clean copper is with acidic solutions but since copper water blocks are sensitive, it is important to be careful with the solutions you try. Steer away from chemical cleaning solutions you might find at the store and try using products you likely have laying around the house that contain the right amount of acid. White vinegar, lemon juice, and cola can all be used to clean your water blocks. Use a small toothbrush to brush your water block with your chosen cleaning solution. Be sure to rinse the water blocks with water after cleaning. Leave them to dry covered in paper towels.

Cleaning Nickel Water Blocks

Unlike their copper counterparts, you cannot use vinegar to clean nickel water blocks, as it is too aggressive for nickel. You can use the same cleaning process as we described for copper water blocks but simply use warm water. Consider flushing the copper water block in warm water before you begin the cleaning process. Be aware that this could affect the color of your water block so to repair it, you may use a soft metal polish cream.

Cleaning Acetal Water Block Tops

Acetal tops may also be cleaned to help keep your liquid cooling system running as smoothly as possible. Though acetal can typically be cleaned with strong chemical solutions like alcohol, a very careful, delicate solutions is recommended for your water block accessories. Try using a small amount of an alcohol solution to clean your acetal tops followed by a thorough rinsing and drying regimen that ensures your parts are completely dry without residue when you reassemble your PC.

What is a Radiator & What Is It’s Role In Liquid Cooling?

If you’re new to liquid cooling, you likely have a lot of questions about the use and importance of the items you’ll need to purchase to build a liquid cooling system. Getting to know the function and purpose of each of the components to a liquid cooling system is the best way to guarantee you are building the best system for yourself. Follow along as we explain radiators and why they are an essential component to your liquid cooling system.

A radiator’s job is to exchange heat between the surrounding air and the copper fins they are equipped with. Because cold air is being kept in contact with the copper fins, the air picks up the heat being radiated and removes it from the loop while water flows through the fins. Naturally, the bigger the fan, the more heat can be removed from the loop. The same logic can be applied to using several smaller fans to work together to remove the maximum amount of heat. Though this is the logic, it is not always necessary to pack your PC with too many fans if you don’t need them.

There is a common rule of thumb when it comes to deciding what size and how many radiators you should be building your PC with. Though each PC and individual needs are different, in general, you should expect to have 120mm of radiator space per component that must be cooled. Furthermore, if you will be overclocking, add an additional 120mm of radiator space. For beginners building a PC, this rule of thumb is almost always both true and useful, keeping choosing the right radiators to be relatively simple.

Choosing Your Tubing Type

A major conflict for many beginners comes from the variety of products available to the point where it is hard to know and choose which product is best for your system. Before you worry about product selection, you must understand the difference between the two main types of tubing; soft tubing and hard tubing.

  • Soft tubing is often made of rubber or silicone and has a variety of color options. Many builders choose soft tubing because of its ability to bend and be reshaped easily. This type of tubing is recommended for first-time builders.
  • Hard tubing avoids soft materials and is often acrylic or PETG. Hard tubing is easy to find and can be bent with the help of household tools.

Read Your Tubing Measurements

Once you choose a tube, you will need to reference it to choose your fittings. Read the tube measurements to make sure you are purchasing the right size fittings by checking the metric and imperial measurements as well as the inner and outer diameters. If you choose soft tubing for your project, you will be able to choose either barbed fittings or compression fittings but if you go with hard tubing, you will have a choice of push-in fittings or compression fittings.

Barbed Fittings

Barbed fittings are often the go-to choice for beginners, as they are easy to use and relatively inexpensive. Most of the time, you will want to also purchase clamps for your barbed fittings.

Compression Fittings

Compression fittings can be used on several different kinds of tubes and are often a first-choice because of their appearance, most with vibrant colors. Unlike barbed fittings, compression fittings are marked with ID and OD markings so be sure to pay attention to these numbers when purchasing.

Push-In Fittings

These hard tube fittings only come in two types and sizes so the decision becomes a bit easier. These are easy to install and get the job done without any hassle.

Hard Compression Fittings

Hard compression fittings have a similar look to compression fittings with their variety and color but they are designed for hard tubing. Designed with a base and a top lock, this type of fitting is extremely stable.
